The power of ... YET!

This week Tī Kōuka talked about the incredible power of YET.

We watched a video about how students can develop a growth mindset.  We discussed how learning new things can be hard and what we can do if we get stuck on something hard, like asking someone for help.

Here are some questions you could ask your child at home:

1. Name a time you were afraid to ask for help. Why were you afraid? (Both parent and student should pick a moment to share)
2. How can you improve the phrase "I can't do this?”
3. Think of a time where you just didn't get “it.” What could you do in that situation?

For writing, we shared some things that we can't do yet and what we might do to achieve our goals.

Have you filled a bucket today?

This week we read a story called 'Have You Filled a Bucket Today?'

The story looks at how we can make ourselves and others happy by filling imaginary buckets.

Here are some ways we thought we could fill someone's bucket.

We are trying hard to fill other people's buckets by playing with new people, taking turns and helping each other.

Collecting Information about our T groups

We read all about Debbie's class and found out lots of information about the children in her class.
We then decided what we would like to find out about our T groups. We worked in groups to collect the information. We made sure we were practising:

  • taking turns
  • sharing our ideas
  • asking questions
  • speaking nicely
  • listening

We helped each other write statements about our graphs.

Finding Treasure

Today some pirates visited Ti Kouka and left treasure lying all around our studio. We went on a treasure hunt to find all the treasure. We counted the treasure and placed it on a graph to see how much we had found.

We had to work together in a group. That meant we had to take turns, share the gluesticks and listen to what our friends had to say.

Sorting it

This week during maths we have been deciding how we can sort different things.
We sorted by shape.
We sorted by colour.
We also learnt how to use a Venn diagram to sort information.

T14 used a venn diagram with their buddy to find out what they both liked.
