Assembly

It was a fantastic assembly on Friday hosted by Ahuriri and Huritini. Ahuriri did a great job of being the presenters. We shared some of our awesome learning about Forces.

Ka pai to the ACTIVE learners who received their certificates today.

Check out our science learning so far this term.

Life Education with Harold

This week Ti Kouka were very excited to see Harold from Life Education again!  This time Harold came to talk to us about sun safety. We learnt how to keep ourselves safe from the sun and stay healthy by drinking lots of water. Harold is great at telling jokes and dancing too!

Run Jump Throw

This term Huritini are enjoying Run Jump Throw rotations for PE every Tuesday.

Run Jump Throw is a foundation programme for teaching athletics specific skills.  It’s based on the philosophy that the development of skills, in a fun participant-centred environment, is the key to participation.  The emphasis is on the development of fundamental movement patterns specific to athletics and helps prepare the children for the events they will participate in higher up in the school.

Here are some photos from the Throwing rotation:

THE STORMS!!!!

T14 wrote some descriptions of the storms that we have had this week.
We tried to use WOW words in our writing.
We wrote sentences to tell what:
I saw...
I heard...
I felt ...
I wondered

Here is some of our fabulous writing

I saw lightning flashing and striking.
I heard thunder booming and rumbling.
I felt scared and frightened.
I wondered how the hail splashes the water.
Macca

I saw yellow lightning flashing in the sky.
I saw hail exploding on the ground.
I heard thunder booming like drums.
I felt scared.
I wondered when it is going to stop!
Christopher

I saw thunder and lightning booming and flashing.
I saw the greyish, blackish stormy clouds.
I saw rain pouring.
I felt a little bit scared.
I heard striking and booming at my house.
I wondered if it would stop.
I wondered if the lightning would make a hole in my roof.
Naomi S

When I saw the lightning it was whole sky lightning.
The hail was bouncing and exploding on the ground.
I heard booming thunder.
The rain flooded the road.
I wondered if a sky-scraper got hit by the lightning.
I felt amazed.
Stan

I saw zigzag lightning and the clouds together.
I heard thunder booming on the ground - it was loud.
I felt very very cold.
I wondered if it was dangerous.
Muhummad

I saw lightning it was close to my house.
The lightning and thunder was loud, it was flashing and zipzapping.
I felt scared.
I wondered if my TV would explode.

Flight and measurement

This week as part of our science focus on Forces & Motion, Ti Kouka have been investigating what makes paper planes and helicopters fly. We have been using words like air resistance, gravity, propellors and thinking like scientists by predicting, testing, observing and recording.

We tested out different paper plane designs and then measured how far they travelled. We used our paces to measure and then had a go at using metre rules after finding out we need our measurements to be fair.

We investigated what would help our helicopters stay in the air longer. We tried different sizes and we noticed whether they spun clockwise or anti-clockwise.

Awesome work scientists!

Ramps and cars exploring friction and measurement

For maths today we were exploring how far our cars would travel after rolling down a ramp.

We then measured if they rolled further on the carpet or on the smooth surface of the wetroom floor.

Tyler's car was the best car. Her car went the longest distance. I won one time but my car wasn't the best. Tyler was pretty good. It was a challenge. The car stopped because the ground was bumpy and that force is called friction. The car went the longest distance and the fastest on the smooth ground in the wetroom. The bumpy ground was the slowest.
